October is a month we bring awareness and or financial service to a children’s group suffering in the world. The children’s group chosen will be picked by the over all majority of votes from schools participating. Individuals will be able to submit the children they would like to support, by April 15th for the coming school year. Documentation of the group and the efforts needed will to be given in written form at the same time as the nomination. A final list of the top three groups will be tallied and voted upon online. The results will be given by May 3rd , for the honored children for the following school year.

Invisible Children, a movement for the children of Northern Uganda ,will be chosen for the second consecutive year. This is a story that was uncovered by three young people on a trip to Africa to make their first documentary. They didn’t know what the theme would be or how the story would play out. Then they observed children walking towards a city with their blankets in hand. These children between the ages of five to fifteen were going to seek refuge or to hide from rebel soldier. They were being abducted then tortured and brutalized to fight someone else’s war.

The best way to start the school year is to reflect on how the peace within us can bring peace to our homes, schools, and communities.

The best way to start the school year is to reflect on how the peace within us can bring peace to our homes, schools, and communities. This is an opportunity for all people to come together, celebrate and take responsibility for their own behavior. There have been many times in the past that I have wanted to blame how I felt on others. How people treated me could make me angry, sad, or happy. I did not realize that I was 100% responsible for my reaction and feelings. Today, we can make a conscious decision to choose peace, tolerance, love and compassion over hate, intolerance, and anger. We can be the demonstration in the world of true freedom and that happens from the inside out.

The adopted event will be Pinwheels for Peace celebrated, on Setptember 21St, the International Day of Peace. In only three short years the event has united 1.2 million people in over 3000 locations around the world. We would like to thank Ellen McMillan for creating such a wonderful activity that joins the world together in love and peace. For more information how to create the pinwheels go to the www.pinwheelsforpeace.com. Make pinwheels for peace a classroom lesson that incorporates art, writing and history. Students can improve their creativity, spatial ability, design principles, writing and expressive interpretation of what peace means to them.
